Maite Hellin, Head of New Business Development at Back Market

Hello! Who are you?

Hi, my name is Maite and I am the Head of New Business Development at Back Market. I come from Málaga, south Spain, where I studied Journalism.

After my studies, I moved to Ireland to improve my English but very soon I got a job at Apple and I stayed there for 3 years and a half. Then I felt I had to go and chase new adventures and I moved to Madrid to study a master in IE Business School. When I was about to finish my master, I sent a few applications here and there and I found a position in Back Market

Since the first interview I felt very engaged with the project, I wanted to know more about the company and the team behind. And at the end I decided to join, and I moved to Paris… best decision ever!

What do you do at Back Market ?

I joined the team 3 years ago when was still very small, and we were building the bases of what Back Market is today. At that time, it was already clear the business potential we had ahead and how exciting was to be part of building the referent of the refurbished industry

I joined as a Business Developer for Spain, my duty was chasing and onboarding new sellers on the platform and taking care of the accounts already selling to make them perform to the maximum. Basically, my main mission was to bring and take care of the Spanish offer to answer our demand in every market.

The team started growing like crazy and a year after my arrival I was already specialized in New Business Development which is looking for new partners and business opportunities for Back Market. And at that time, I was offered to build and manage a New Business Development team dedicated to that.

What is your typical day at Back Market?

Today I have a team of 13 people and growing. If you are interested you can see our offers clicking here :

My key duty is supporting them so they can perform to their best.

I would say that there is not such thing like “typical day” at Back Market but what I do is:

  1. Analyzing the team’s performance.
  2. Meeting with them to improve it.
  3. Putting processes in place to be more efficient.
  4. And aligning all this work with the rest of the sales department or with the other teams we work close to.

Why have you joined the company?

I joined the company because I was aligned with the vision and I wanted to participate in the mission of creating an alternative way of consuming as common and accessible as consuming new. Also, because the business potential was huge, and I saw the challenges we had ahead and all the opportunities that will come with them and because I loved the team since the very first interview.

Back Market offered me everything I could dream for in a job: challenges, a good purpose to work hard every day, professional development and a great team to learn from and have fun.

What is your favorite product on the platform?

The last product I bought at Back Market was a Dyson vacuum cleaner and I am in love with it because it’s powerful and cordless. Now I would like to have a look to the Bluetooth headphones.

What was the last app you have installed on your smartphone?

I am gonna sound extremely boring but the last three apps I downloaded were for work. The last one was a VPN for a business trip to China (that wasn’t boring at all, actually).

What was your last ecological act?

I feel like I still have lots to do regarding this topic but lately I have been trying to consume less meat and more seasonal and local products with a minimum packaging.

What is your mantra?

« Tempus fugit » which is a Latin phrase that refers to how fast the time goes by. It’s not a motto as « carpe diem » to just enjoy the moment because life is short, it is more an advice against sloth and procrastination. To make the most out of the time we have in our lives, basically.
